Estrella, Miguel to wrestle for championships at Cadet/Junior Nationals
Nanea Estrella and Jahnea Miguel each advanced to championship matches at the Marines Cadet/Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D., on Saturday.
Estrella, a rising junior at Lahainaluna High School, and Miguel, a junior-to-be at Baldwin, are the first Maui County wrestlers to make the finals at the Cadet/Junior Nationals.
In her preliminary matches at 122 pounds, Estrella defeated Justice Seeley of Missouri 18-8 and Dominica Daugherty of Pennsylvania 8-0. Miguel, at 138 pounds, defeated Madison Diaz of Florida, 8-0.
Estrella then defeated Sofia Macaluso of New York 6-1 in the quarterfinals and decisioned Maggie Palmore of Maryland in the semifinals, 17-6. Miguel won by tech fall over Jordan Suarez of Texas, 11-0, in the quarterfinals and defeated Annie Hua of California 12-4 in the semifinals.
Estrella will face Alexys Zepeda of Oregon in the finals while Miguel will face Sara Suljemani of Illinois.
Coby Ravida, a rising junior at Baldwin, won three matches at 106 pounds. He defeated Dylan Chappell of Pennsylvania 17-16 and Jackson Dutel of Texas 10-0. He then lost to Max Black of Colorado 10-0 before defeating Nash Singleton of Oregon 12-0 in the consolation bracket. Ravida will also wrestle today.
Estrella and Miguel are two-time Hawaii high school state champions while Ravida won his first state title in February.
