Maui Pony All-Stars headed to West Zone tournament

The Maui Pony All-Star team poses with its championship banner after winning the Pony state tournament, held June 22-25 at Central Oahu Regional Park. Maui went 5-1 in the tournament — the All-Stars defeated Windward 13-4 and East Oahu 18-0, lost to Kauai 9-3, beat West Oahu 13-1 and posted 16-2 and 10-0 wins over Kauai. The championship team members are Wehiwa Aloy, Ky-Mani Corpuz, Zachary Dando, Makane Honokaupu, Vincent Iwamura, Japheth Joaquin, Levi Maddela, Kealaula Medeiros, Davin Lewis, Uluaki Oto, McKay Pali, Zachary Pascual, Kahiau Teruya, Kelton Tom and Kamaunu Vehikite-Kahaialii. Coaches are Jamie Aloy, Greg Moniz and Scott “Kazu” Teruya. The team advances to the West Zone tournament in Westhills, Calif., Aug 2-5. The Maui Ponies aren’t the only Valley Isle Pony League team headed to Zones — starting Thursday, the Maui Colts play in San Jose, Calif., and the Maui Palominos play in Compton, Calif.
