Fernandos play at WTT Junior Nationals

Competing with Team Hawaii at the World Team Tennis Junior Nationals, Zack and Nikki Fernando of Kihei helped the Hawaii team finish 14th in the 16-team field last week at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

The WTT Junior Nationals, hosted by tennis legend Billie Jean King, featured coed teams from across the United States.

In addition to the competition, players also participated in seminars and a clinic hosted by King.

‘Maui Magic’ team headed to nationals

Maui’s adult women’s USTA 55-and-over “Maui Magic” tennis team won the state title last weekend, sweeping Oahu in the final match of the sectional championships at Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch.

Playing in hot and humid conditions, the “Maui Magic” women punched their tickets to the USTA Adult 55 and Over National Championships, scheduled for Oct. 26-28 in Orlando, Fla.

Ages of the Maui team’s members range from 58-77. Team members are Debra Lordan, Diane Nagasaka, Jane McKinney, Janie King, Joanne intos, Kelly Thayer, Mary Bev Lindner, Patricia Freeman, Susan Sato, Diantha Mackwell and captain Jane Sakakihara.

Sakakihara has captained Maui’s league teams for over 38 years and has led teams to nine national championships.

Larry Libres tourney scheduled for Aug. 4

The 31st annual Larry Libres Fishing and Diving Tournament will be held Aug. 4 at Kanaha Beach Park.

Registration is from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Early entrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Oama fishing is from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and tako diving is from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

There will be awards for the largest tako caught free-diving, and for the longest oama caught pole fishing in two categories — 12 and under, and 13 and over.

The free contest is sponsored by the Maui Boardsailing Association.

Munetake named All-American Scholar

Tyler Munetake was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholar along with two of his Gonzaga teammates on Wednesday.

The senior business administration major and former Baldwin High School standout, was eligible for the honor by being a junior or senior that has competed in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participated in 50 percent of his team’s competitive round, have a stoke average under 76 in Division I and maintained a minimum cumulative career 3.2 grade-point average.
