Winds finally show up for Vic-Maui boats

The Maui News

With some trade winds behind them, boats in the Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race got a much-needed boost Wednesday as they continued to close in on the finish line at Lahaina Harbor.

Boats reported consistent, though not strong, winds between 10 and 19 knots as the race completed its 11th day.

At 3 p.m. Wednesday, Firefly continued to lead the Division 1 race, with 591 nautical miles to go. However, its lead over Joy Ride had shrunk slightly to 18 nautical miles.

In Division 2, Salient was 697 nautical miles from Lahaina, followed by Kraken (738), Turnagain (758), Anjo (825) and OxoMoxo (865).

In the cruising class, Serenite was 859 nautical miles away.

On Tuesday, OxoMoxo reported that its crew had freed a sea turtle caught in a fishing net. The story went viral, with a post on Vic-Maui’s Facebook page getting over 1,600 reactions and 400 shares by Wednesday afternoon.
