Alves rallies for Vans Pro Junior win

Maui’s Cole Alves holds the winner’s check after capturing the World Surf League Vans Pro Junior title Saturday in Virginia Beach, Va. In the final, the 17-year-old scored a near-perfect 9.17 in the final minutes to rally for the win. Alves had a two-wave score of 16.00, beating out California’s Tyler Gunter (12.57) and Nick Marshall (11.27), and North Carolina’s Bo Raynor (9.54). “I’m so stoked to represent for Hawaii again after some of the guys have won this one,” Alves said. “I feel like this is my breakthrough event after never really doing well in any contests.”
