Maui prevails in West Zone battle with Long Beach

The Maui Pony All-Stars rallied from a 4-1 deficit and prevailed in a back-and-forth battle with Long Beach, Calif., 6-5 on Friday to improve to 2-0 at the West Zone tournament in West Hills, Calif.

Maui scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, but Long Beach responded with four runs in the third. Ky-Mani Corpuz then launched a three-run homer in the fourth to tie the game at 4, and each team scored a run in the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, pinch-hitter Levi Maddela hit a leadoff home run to left field for the go-ahead run.

Down to their last out, Long Beach loaded the bases after Japheth Joaquin — who took over on a 2-0 count — walked Ryan Skjonsby. But Joaquin then got Robert Voss to ground out to end the game.

Makane Honokaupu hit a double and a triple for Maui, which will play either Long Beach or Orem, Utah, again today — Maui defeated Orem 21-0 on Thursday.
