Ole Longboard Classic set for Saturday

The 25th annual Ole Longboard Classic will be held Saturday at Launiupoko Park.

The contest, named in honor of longtime Lahaina surfboard shaper Bob Olson, will have 14 divisions: menehune (ages 10 and under), juniors (11-13), junior women (14-18), junior men (14-18), 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over, women masters (35 and older), open women, open men, Ole and tandem.

First heats start at 7 a.m.

The entry fee is $25, and each competitor receives a T-shirt and lunch. Competitors must be pre-register at Hi-Tech Surf Sports in Kahului, Paia, or Kihei, or Ole’s shop in Lahaina. There will be no beach entries.

Trotto wins at national throws championship

Mary Trotto of Kihei took first place in the 70-74 age division in three events at the National Master Throws Championships, held last weekend in Seattle.

As the lone competitor in her age group, Trotto began the event by winning the throws pentathlon with a total of 2,451 points. She had throws of 14.84 meters in the hammer, 6.06 in the shot put, 12.92 in the discus, 14.10 in the javelin and 7.06 in the 12-pound weight.

On Sunday, she picked up wins in the super weight throw and the ultraweight pentathlon.

In the super weight throw, Trotto threw a 20-pound weight 5.53 meters.

In the ultraweight pentathlon, she threw weights of 12, 20, 25, 35 and 44 pounds. She finished with 2,721 points.


Hawaii Pearls Maui to hold tryouts Saturday

Hawaii Pearls Maui softball will be holding a second day of tryouts on Saturday at Keo­puolani Field 3 in Kahului.

Tryouts will be from 9 a.m. to noon for all divisions, U8 to U16. Participants are asked to bring a copy of their birth certificate, water, proper shoes, glove, helmet, bat and softball attire.
