Maui surfers advance as HIC Pro gets underway

The Maui News

Maui’s Cody Young put up the best score Sunday on the first day of the HIC Pro at Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore.

Young, who had a bye in the first round of the World Surf League qualifying series event, posted a score of 16.83 to beat Oahu’s Kiron Jabour (13.16) and Landon McNamara (5.24), and California’s Skip McCullough (9.10), securing his spot in the third round.

Fellow Maui surfers Logan Bediamol (11.70) and Kai Lenny (12.23) also earned a spot in the next round after placing second in their heats.

Among those still to surf in the second round are Jackson Bunch and Ian Gentil.

Lahaina’s Dusty Payne, who is competing for the first time since his near-fatal accident at Pipeline in January, has a double-bye in the event and is through to the third round, along with Imaikalani Devault and Tanner Hendrickson.

The competition continues today, surf permitting.
