Na Alii, Spartans fall in state quarterfinals

The Maui News – Maui Interscholastic League champions King Kekaulike High School and Seabury Hall each suffered four-set losses in the quarterfinals of the New City Nissan Girls Volleyball State Championships on Thursday night in Honolulu.

Na Alii, the No. 3 seed in Division I, fell short in their attempt to knock off Iolani, 25-18, 22-25, 25-12, 25-8 at Moanalua gym.

King Kekaulike kept up early in the first set, but the Raiders — runners-up of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu who are ranked No. 8 in the nation by USA Today — pulled away to easily take the frame.

Na Alii responded by taking a tight second set, but they ran out of steam, falling behind early in both of the last two sets.

Nohokula Lind had 10 kills and 10 digs for Na Alii (14-1). Nina Macphetridge added seven kills, Kalena Vaivai had 26 assists and 10 digs, Temahh Shaw added five kills and five blocks, Lyric Love had five kills and three blocks, Kiana Anakeala had 16 digs and Nanna Inoue had 15 digs.

Elena Oglivie had 22 kills to lead Iolani (11-5), which had 10 aces to Na Alii’s one.

The Spartans, seeded No. 2 in the Division II tournament, lost to Le Jardin 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15 at Kaimuki.

Isabel Bennett led Seabury (13-2) with 19 kills and 19 digs. Ella Connor added 15 kills and 11 digs, but no other Spartan got more than two kills. Madee Dougherty dished out 27 assists, and Nanea Andrade had 18 digs.

Ellie Diersbock had 25 kills to lead Le Jardin (13-2).

The Spartans play Kohala today in the fifth-place semifinal.

In a D-II consolational semifinal at St. Francis, Hana (13-5) defeated Konawaena (10-10) 27-25, 25-21 and will face Leilehua in the consolation final today at Kaimuki.
