Braves decline qualifying offer for Suzuki

KURT SUZUKI

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves did not extend a qualifying offer to any of their free agents by Friday’s deadline, including catcher Kurt Suzuki.

Suzuki hit .271 with 12 home runs, 50 RBIs and 45 runs to help the Braves win the National League East this season, his 12th in the major leagues and second with Atlanta. The Baldwin High School graduate split playing time with Tyler Flowers, who during the season signed a contract extension with the Braves.

Atlanta was eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Division Series.

Before the start of the postseason, the 35-year-old Suzuki acknowledged in an interview with The Maui News that he could see “the light at the end,” but did not say he intended to retire.

“We’ll see,” he said. “Obviously performance has a lot to do with it. If I feel like I can still perform, that comes into play. Obviously, which opportunity presents itself and if I feel like it’s an opportunity to pursue, then it all works out. But definitely, it’s in the back of my head, for sure.”

The Braves also opted against qualifying offers to outfielder and cleanup hitter Nick Markakis, starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez, starter Brandon McCarthy, infielder Ryan Flaherty and reliever Peter Moylan. McCarthy has said he plans to retire.
