Escario wins two titles at Aloha Classic

Maui resident Ilya Escario claimed two division titles, and two other Valley Isle windsurfers also picked up championships as the International Windsurfing Tour’s Aloha Classic wrapped up Tuesday at Hookipa Beach Park.

Escario capped off a dominating week with victories in the amateur and masters finals. The native of Italy had scores of 5.93 and 5.10 to win the amateur final over Luc Guidroz (9.94), Simeon Glasson (9.70) and Jeff Henderson (8.83).

In the masters final, Escario’s opening 7.30 carried him to the win. He finished with a total of 12.33, beating out Paul Karaolides (10.94), Kai Katchadourian (10.83) and Patrick Bergeron (8.50).

In addition to his fourth-place finish in the amateur division, Henderson captured the grand masters championship with a total of 11.23. Greg Aguera (8.00) placed second, followed by Rob Funk (6.17) and Eric Martin (4.43).

Winning the youth title was Jake Schettewi, who dominated the final with rides of 6.83 and 6.20. He defeated Takara Ishi (11.74), Sugi Takuma (11.20) and Nicolo Spanu (8.90) to take the crown.
