Jaws Challenge on yellow alert for Monday, Tuesday

Next week could be a very busy one on the local surf scene.

The World Surf League’s Big Wave Tour announced Friday it has put the Jaws Challenge on yellow alert, with the competition possibly beginning on Monday or Tuesday at Peahi on Maui’s North Shore.

The BWT recently started its season with the Nazare Challenge in Portugal.

“We are coming off of a great event at Nazare and have a promising swell heading toward Peahi for the Jaws Challenge,” WSL BWT commissioner Mike Parsons said. “We have issued a yellow alert for a potential run on Monday, November 26 or Tuesday, November 27. The waves are forecast in the 30-to-45-foot face range, so we will continue to monitor and hopefully issue a green alert tomorrow.”

The anticipated swell is also good news for the Beachwaver Maui Pro, which starts its holding period on Sunday. The event — the final stop on the WSL Women’s Championship Tour — is being run at Honolua Bay.

Over on Oahu, the Vans World Cup, the second stage of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing being held at Sunset Beach, could also start on Sunday.
