Waves edge Rainbow Wahine with late 3

Pepperdine’s Paige Fecske nailed a 3-pointer with 9 seconds remaining to lift the Waves to a season-opening 65-64 win over the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team on Tuesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

In a closely contested game — the Rainbow Wahine briefly held an 8-point advantage in the third quarter for the largest lead of the game — UH entered the fourth holding a slim 51-49 lead. The teams would trade the lead six times in the period, with two free throws by Makenna Woodfolk putting Hawaii ahead 64-62 with just over a minute left.

After the Waves’ Barbara Sitanggan grabbed a rebound of Woodfolk’s missed layup with 20 seconds remaining, Pepperdine called timeout, setting up the decisive play.

UH’s Savannah Reier missed a jumper as time expired.

Woodfolk led Hawaii with 18 points. Courtney Middap added 14 points and Tia Kanoa had 11. The Rainbow Wahine had 21 turnovers to Pepperdine’s 15.

Fecske scored 22 points to lead the Waves.

UH next goes on the road and plays at San Diego State on Friday and at San Diego on Sunday.
