Dec. 20–The J. Walter Cameron Center is seeking volunteers to help with managing parking at the Lahaina Civic Center for the upcoming Sentry Tournament of Champions golf tournament at the Kapalua Plantation Course. Volunteers are needed for all four days of the winners-only PGA Tour tournament — Jan. 3-6 — as well as the pro-am on Jan. 2. There are two shifts per day — 6 a.m. to noon and 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch and water will be provided. Monday–The Maui Pukaball Tournament and Clinics by Pickleball Maui will be held Dec. 6-10 at Wailea Tennis Club. The entry fee until Monday for the round-robin tournament is $75 for Hawaii residents, $90 for all others. Women’s doubles is set for Dec. 7, mixed doubles on Dec. 8 and men’s doubles on Dec. 9. Clinics, which will be led by pickleball and tennis pro Lisa Naumu, cost $175 for a four-hour session (Dec. 6 and 9), $100 for a 2-hour session (Dec. 7-8) and $125 for a 45-minute private session (Dec. 10). Jan. 17–The Maui Oceanfront Marathon’s Free Cookie Run is scheduled for Jan. 17 at 8 a.m. at Kalama Beach Park in Kihei. The untimed fun run is about 2.8 miles long and free to enter. Runners are asked to bring cookies, donuts, bagels, fruit or a case of water to share, and old shoes to donate to the Kihei Youth Center.
Jan. 20–The Maui Oceanfront Marathon will be held on Jan. 20, starting at 5 a.m. at the Shops of Wailea and ending at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina. The marathon also includes special start times for runners 55 years old and over (4:40 a.m.) and others needing extra time to finish by noon (from 3:30 to 4:30 a.m.). In addition, there is a half marathon (6:35 a.m.), 15K (6:35 a.m.) and 5K (8:30 a.m.) — those races all have starting points between Wailea and Lahaina. The entry fee is $130 (marathon), $120 (half marathon), $120 (15K), $80 (10K) and $75 (5K). Discounts available for Maui residents, active military and seniors over 60. Event registration and number pickup will be held on Jan. 18 at 2480 S. Tuesday–The USTA Play to Learn youth tennis program’s six-week second fall session continues this week, with classes being held each Tuesday at the Kahului Community Center courts and each Wednesday at the Eddie Tam courts in Makawao. Classes, for beginners and advance beginners, are from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for children ages 12-14, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for 6-8 and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for 9-11. The fee is $5 for each hour-long session. Saturday–An officials clinic and certification for all Maui Interscholastic League track and field officials will be held on Saturday at Maui High School, room P-36 (located behind the gym) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The clinic is open to all officials and coaches, as well as anyone interested in volunteering for the upcoming season. All schools that are in charge of field events should send their representatives that will be officiating their assigned event. Clinic instructors will be Glenn Wakamoto, Bill Henshaw and Doug Kilpatrick. They cover all areas of being a track and field official under National Federation of High School rules.
