MIL puts 21 into state semifinals

The Maui Interscholastic League advanced 21 wrestlers — 10 girls and 11 boys — to the semifinals of the Texaco/HHSAA State Championships on Wednesday at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu.

Among the girls, defending state champions Waipuilani Beauchamp-Estrella (132 pounds) and Jahnea Miguel (138) of Baldwin, and Lahainaluna’s Sami Saribay (107) and Nanea Estrella (127) all made it to the semifinals.

Miguel and Estrella will both be going for their third state titles today.

The defending state champion Bears also advanced Tianna Fernandez (102), Tyeisha Takamori (145) and Shayna Kamaka (155) to the semifinals.

Lahainaluna’s Shannon Jaramillo (184) also made the semifinals, as did Molokai’s Keeya Bicoy (122) and Sunni Chow (155).

Kamehameha Kapalama led the girls team standings with 103 points after Day 1. Moanalua (84) was second, followed by Baldwin (70.5), Campbell (64.5) and Lahainaluna (62).

The MIL boys to qualify for the semifinals included Baldwin’s Coby Ravida (113), the state champion last year at 106. The Bears’ Tobey Ravida (106), Billy Treu (145) and Ben Tokanang (285) also made the semifinals.

Other semifinalists include Lahainaluna’s Jesse Dudoit (132), Kawehi Gillcoat (138) and Keaka Kuaana (160); Kamehameha Maui’s Kanoa Aruba-Starwood (152), Zachary Genobia (170) and Darius Mynar (195); and Lanai’s Alan Sanchez Jr. (113).

Kamehameha Kapalama was well ahead in the boys team chase with 105 points, 30 more than second-place Punahou. Baldwin and Lahainaluna were tied for third with 70 points apiece.

The Lunas’ Sami Saribay works her way to a pin of Moanalua’s Miya Jhun in the 107 quarterfinals.

Baldwin’s Billy Treu tries to pin Leilehua’s Naikoa Simao in a 145 quarterfinal. Treu won 9-7.

Kamehameha Maui’s Darius Mynar heads to a victory by pin over Iolani’s Kai Knitter at 195.
