Short-handed Warriors get past Sabers

The Maui News

The top-seeded Kamehameha Schools Maui boys volleyball team was missing four regulars and dressed just seven players, but the Warriors beat Maui High in four sets in the semifinals of the Maui Interscholastic League Division I tournament on Monday at Jon Garcia Gym in Wailuku.

The Warriors (13-0) won 25-21, 25-22, 25-27, 25-18 to advance to the tournament final against Lahainaluna tonight at Baldwin’s gym.

Ethan James led Kamehameha Maui with 16 kills, Sheldon Dudoit-Caban had 11 kills, Kale Spencer had 10 kills and four blocks, and Brennan Mendez had 18 digs for the Warriors. The Sabers (5-9) did provide statistics.

Kamehameha Maui coach Robert Brede said he was missing one player due violation of school rules, one to academic probation, one who decided to stick exclusively with the track and field team, and another is dancing at the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo.

The Warriors have already qualified for next week’s state tournament.
