Fatal hit-and-run victim identified

Police identified the victim of a fatal hit-and-run collision Sunday night in Kihei as 16-year-old Hannah Simmons of Kihei.

Medics took Simmons to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition after she was struck about 8:50 p.m. Sunday on Piilani Highway at its intersection with Uwapo Road. A motorist traveling on Kaiwahine Street hit the pedestrian as she was walking in a crosswalk and as the driver was making a left turn onto Piilani Highway, police said.

The motorist fled the scene. Simmons died at the hospital.

A preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle involved is possibly a blue Dodge or Chevy full-sized pickup truck with an after-market lift and tires, police said.

The incident marks Maui County’s 23rd fatality this year, compared with 21 at the same time last year. Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to call police at 244-6400.
