Peahi Challenge gets green light for Thursday
The Peahi Challenge has been scheduled to take place Thursday, the World Surf League’s Big Wave Tour announced Tuesday.
The tour said swells are projected to reach at least 30 feet at the spot also known as “Jaws.”
The field includes Kuau’s Billy Kemper, who won the inaugural edition of the contest in December.
This year’s event will also have a 12-person women’s division – Maui’s Paige Alms and Andrea Moller are part of the field.
The men’s field of 15 has two other Mauians, Albee Layer and Kai Lenny. The event wild cards are all from Maui — Ian Walsh, Shaun Walsh, Tyler Larronde, Dege O’Connell and Francisco Porcella.
The tour has had just one event take place this year, the Puerto Escondido Challenge in Mexico. South Africa’s Grant Baker won, and California’s Greg Long was the runner-up. Lenny finished seventh.
The Northern Hemisphere window began Oct. 15 and runs to Feb. 28.
