Bears defeat Na Alii in second-round opener

Chayce Akaka accounted for six touchdowns as Baldwin High School defeated King Kekaulike 55-6 on Friday at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku in the opening game of the Maui Interscholastic League football schedule’s second round.

Akaka threw touchdown passes to Rohel Ruiz and Mahi DeFrancia and ran for four scores as the Bears improved to 3-2 overall.

Akaka has accounted for 20 touchdowns altogether this year, a total that has been surpassed just twice in the previous five full seasons — he had 25 (20 passing and five rushing) in 2015, and Makoa Filikitonga had 21 (12 passing and nine rushing) for Lahainaluna in 2014.

Na Alii (0-5) took an early lead on Rilee Peters’ 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

King Kekaulike has lost its last 27 league games.
