Hana clinches berth in state tournament

The Hana High School girls volleyball team clinched a Division II state tournament berth Thursday by defeating Molokai 25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18 in a Maui Interscholastic League Division II tournament semifinal at Jon Garcia Gym in Wailuku.

Fushia Pua had 17 kills, two aces and two blocks for the Dragons (11-2), last year’s league champions.

The Farmers (9-5) got seven kills and 21 digs from Shaelyn McCutcheon.

In the other semifinal, Isabel Bennett had 13 kills for Seabury Hall in a 25-7, 25-12, 25-8 victory over Lanai.

The Spartans (13-0) were already assured of a spot in the state tournament.

The Pine Lasses finished the year 5-9.

Hana must beat Seabury on Friday to force a rematch Saturday for the league title. The Dragons are the only MIL team to take a set from the Spartans this season, losing in five in both teams’ league opener in August, and in four to finish the regular season last week.

Also on Thursday, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association announced the bracket for the Division I state tournament.

The MIL’s Division I girls volleyball runner-up — either King Kekaulike or Kamehameha Maui — will play a home match Monday in the first round. Na Alii or the Warriors will face Mililani, and the winner will take on top-seeded Kamehameha Kapalama on Oct. 26 at McKinley.

The MIL champion will be seeded third, and will play on Oct. 26 at Moanalua against the winner of Monday’s match between Waianae and defending champion Iolani.

Kamehameha Maui and King Kekaulike are to meet in the MIL tournament final on Friday.
