Lahainaluna defeats Baldwin in overtime

Pablo Rico kicked a 19-yard field goal in overtime after Kawehi Gillcoat intercepted a pass on the first possession of the extra period, and the Lahinaluna High School football team defeated Baldwin 17-14 on Friday in a Maui Interscholastic League game at Sue Cooley Stadium in Lahaina.

Joshua Tihada ran 16 times for 120 yards for the Lunas (7-0 MIL overall, 3-0 second round), who won their 11th game in a row — the defending Division II state champions can clinch an 11th straight trip to the tournament with a loss by Kamehameha Maui on Saturday against King Kekaulike.

Baldwin (3-3, 1-1) had forced overtime after a 4-yard pass from Chayce Akaka to Brayden Reys-Sojot on fourth-and-goal with 2 minutes, 20 seconds to play made the score 14-14.

Akaka ran 17 times for 129 yards, and Bishop Wickes had 104 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

The Bears, who face Kamehameha next week, must beat Maui High on Oct. 20 to force a playoff game for the MIL Division I crown.
