Maui High beats Baldwin, claims league crown
Maui High School clinched the Maui Interscholastic League Division I football championship Friday with a 26-13 win over Baldwin at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku.
Naia Nakamoto ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns for the Sabers (5-3 overall, 3-1 MIL second round).
Solomone Tongi ran for 146 yards and a score for Maui High.
The Sabers trailed 14-13 at halftime, and the score stayed that way until Tongi’s 36 yard touchdown run with just over five minutes left. Nakamoto’s 5-yard score then accounted for the final points.
Chayce Akaka threw two touchdown passes for the Bears (4-4, 2-2), both to Kaikea Silva. Akaka accounted for 29 touchdowns this season — 19 passing, eight rushing, one receiving and one on a kickoff return — and finishes his high school career with 50 touchdown throws.
