Update 1:45 p.m.: Firefighters respond to Olowalu fire

No highway closures reported; shelter open

Fire crews are at the scene of a brush fire in Olowalu.

Maui County firefighters are at the scene of a brush fire in Olowalu.

There were no immediate reports of highway closures in the area.

Eight fire companies with three water tankers and the Air 1 and Air 2 helicopters are battling the blaze, fire officials said.

Maui police officers also are on scene to evacuate residents who may be threatened by the fire. There is also an emergency shelter now open for people evacuating because of the Olowalu fire. The shelter is being operated by the American Red Cross. For information on the shelter, call the Maui County Emergency Management Agency at 270-7285.
