Maui County evacuation shelters now open

Molokai residents urged to seek shelter early

Evacuation shelters opened countywide at 2 p.m. today.

And Molokai residents were urged to seek shelter at Molokai High School early, before rains potentially flood south-facing shores, causing transportation problems.

Shelters were opened an hour early for people with special health needs.

Maui County is operating the shelters in cooperation with the American Red Cross and state Department of Education.

The list of shelters includes:

* Hana High School.

* Lahaina Intermediate School.

* King Kekaulike High School in Pukalani.

* Molokai High School.

* Maui High School in Kahului.

* Lokelani Intermediate School in Kihei.

* Lanai High and Elementary School.

Maui High, Lokelani and Lanai High schools are “pet friendly” shelters.

Smoking and drinking are not allowed at shelters or in parking lots.

Evacuees should bring whatever they need to make themselves comfortable at shelters. For more information, call the Red Cross hotline at 357-3387, or the Maui Emergency Management Agency at 270-7285; or visit
