UH men open with victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Mike Thomas and Gibson Johnson each scored 19 points as the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team won 82-70 over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday in an Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic game at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu that began the season for each team.

Gibson was 6-for-8 from the field, and also had nine rebounds and five assists. Thomas had five rebounds.

Jack Purchase had 18 points and eight assists for the Rainbow Warriors.

The Golden Lions got 25 points from Martaveous McKnight.

Hawaii’s next game is on Sunday against North Dakota, which beat Troy 83-80 in Friday’s tournament opener.
