UH falls to UC Santa Barbara in overtime

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Max Heidegger scored 25 points to lead UC Santa Barbara to an 84-82 overtime victory over the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team on Thursday.
Jalen Canty added 21 points with 10 rebounds, Leland King II scored 21 points and Gabe Vincent 10 with six assists for the Gauchos (17-5, 6-2 Big West), who won their fifth straight conference game and 10th straight at home.
Heidegger and King each hit 3s for a 76-72 Gauchos lead and Canty’s layup made it 78-74 after the Rainbow Warriors missed 3 of 4 from the field to begin overtime. Hawaii closed to 78-76 on Michael Thomas’ layup with 1:04 left, but King’s jumper gave the Gauchos a four-point edge.
The teams traded free throws and UH closed to 83-82 on Jack Purchase’s 3 with 9 seconds left. King made a free throw and Marcus Jackson blocked Brocke Stepteau’s jumper with a second left.
The Gauchos led 36-30 at halftime. Stepteau tied it with a 3 at the end of regulation.
Thomas scored 25 points with 10 rebounds, Stepteau had 15 points and Gibson Johnson 10 for the Rainbow Warriors (13-7, 4-3), who have lost two straight following a four-game winning streak.
UH next plays at Cal Poly on Saturday.
