Rainbow Warriors upset No. 1 49ers in five sets

The Maui News Rado Parapunov had 19 kills and Stijn van Tilburg had 17 to lead the sixth-ranked University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team to a 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-11 victory Saturday over No. 1 Long Beach State on senior night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

The Rainbow Warriors avenged a five-set loss the night before by handing the 49ers their first defeat of the season.

The fifth set was tied at 11 before UH closed out the victory with a pair of Parapunov kills, an ace by Gage Worsley and another Parapunov kill.

Joe Worsley dished out 51 assists and also had eight digs and four blocks for the Rainbow Warriors (18-7, 6-4 Big West Conference).

TJ DeFalco led Long Beach State (24-1, 9-1) with 25 kills.

Hawaii next plays in the Big West tournament, set for Thursday through Saturday in Long Beach, Calif.
