Stansberry hits five 3s as UH routs Humboldt State


HONOLULU (AP) — Eddie Stansberry hit five 3-pointers and finished with 16 points and Jack Purchase added 15 points, going 5-of-8 from behind the arc, to help the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team beat Division II Humboldt State 90-54 on Saturday night in an Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic game at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Brocke Stepteau had 13 points and Mate Colina scored 10 for UH (2-0).

Purchase hit a 3 to open the scoring, and the Rainbow Warriors never trailed. After Jackson Strong made a jumper that pulled Humboldt State within two with 10 minutes, 14 seconds left in the first half, the Lumberjacks went scoreless for nearly five minutes as Hawaii scored 20 consecutive points to make it 33-11. Humboldt State trailed by at least 20 the rest of the way.

Strong, the only Lumberjacks player to score in double figures, finished with 13 points.

Hawaii shot 50 percent from the field, including 7-of-15 from 3-point range, and limited Humboldt State to eight field goals on 27.6-percent shooting in the first half.

The Rainbow Warriors wrap up the tournament today against North Texas. The winner takes the tournament championship.
