The Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational begins Saturday and will feature 21 artists from the Mainland and Australia along with five Hawaii artists who will spend a week painting island scenes in oil and pastels.

Invitations to the “en plein air,” or in full air, event were extended to artists who are popular with collectors, according to organizers. Events will give art lovers the chance to watch painters create work as well as opportunities to purchase pieces.

The kickoff paint-off at Lahaina Harbor on Saturday will be from 7:30 to 11 a.m. The freshly painted work will then be displayed for sale from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pioneer Inn’s courtyard. A sunset paint-out will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Montage Kapalua Bay. A timed “quick draw” painting event will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 24 at Hanaka’o’o Park, also known as Canoe Beach. And the “Art to Heart” gala and art sale sponsored by the Royal Lahaina will be held at the resort from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 24. Additional events will feature more opportunities for the public to purchase art, as well as collaborations with youth artists and the Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra & Friends.
