Art makes a great holiday gift idea

Looking for a unique present for someone special (or yourself)? Luckily, Maui offers an abundance of art venues one can visit to find a holiday gift during the month of December.

Village Galleries

Village Galleries is pleased to announce the 2018 Lahaina Poster Contest winner, David Westerfield who will be painting on location at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua property from 9 a.m. to noon Friday. Stop in at the gallery, located off the lobby, for directions to his painting site.

From 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Westerfield will be signing copies of the poster during the Village Galleries annual holiday show at 120 Dickenson St., Lahaina. For more information, call 661-4402.

Village Galleries Lahaina hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Kapalua hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily (and by reservation for later hours).

Maui Hands Galleries

Plein air painter Jan Shaner will be creating her colorful oil paintings in the gallery and discussing her work from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Friday at 612 Front St., in Lahaina. And watercolorist and Maui girl, Luana Kama, will be painting live in the gallery every from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday. For more information, call 667-9898.

At the Makawao location, 1169 Makawao Ave., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday, mixed-media artist Baz Maui will be working in gallery with materials directly from nature including tree bark and banana leaves. For more information, call 572-2008.

Artist Christine Halton, who paints with oils on etched wood, will be creating new pieces at the following two locations: From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa in Kaanapali; and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dec. 13, at 84 Hana Highway in Paia. Sunnyside Art Alliance

Original paintings and ceramics by Upcountry Maui artists, Ike and Patti Gildersleeve, Joanne Hopper, Deb Lynch and Matt Montagne will be available during a Christmas Holiday Art Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Sunnyside Art Alliance, 1799 Baldwin Ave., Makawao. Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center

Hui Holidays artisans’ showcase continues at 2841 Baldwin Ave., in Makawao, daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a wonderland of local and handmade gifts for everyone on your list. Admission to the gallery and shop are free. Also, plan to attend special Art Market Nights (Wednesday, Dec. 13 and 20) when the gallery will be open until 7 p.m. for shopping.

If you prefer to make your own gifts, the Hui offers the following classes for a handmade holiday:

Blow Your Own Maui Glass Ornament by Stephen Fellerman. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays. Reservation is required. Tuition and supply fee is $95 per person.

Print Your Own Wrapping Paper by Tania Arens. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dec. 9. Tuition is $25 ($32 nonmember) and supply fee is $15.

Joyful Jewelry: Maui Made Bangles by Julie Matheis. From 5 to 9 p.m., Dec. 12. Tuition is $45 ($57 nonmember) and supply fee is $20.

Lauhala Ornament Workshop by visiting artist Lufi Luteru. From 1 to 4 p.m., Dec. 15. Tuition is $25 ($32 nonmember) and supply fee is $10.

Enameled Holiday Ornaments: Made on Maui by Roberta Ann Weisenburg. From 5 to 9 p.m., Dec. 19. Tuition is $35 ($44 nonmember) and supply fee is $15.

If you know of any keiki who’d like to make their loved ones a special holiday present, the Hui offers fun classes for kids during Art Market nights from 4 to 5 p.m. Drop off the kids for a workshop while you do some holiday shopping. Tuition and supply fee for these keiki classes is $10.

Snowflake Ornaments by Julie Matheis. Wednesday. Keiki will create snowflake ornaments in a variety of patterns using pipe cleaners and beads.

Make Your Own Snowpeople by Katie Peterson. Dec. 13. Using a sock, pom-poms, cotton stuffing, popcorn kernels and toothpicks, keiki will create whimsical snowpeople that won’t melt away at the end of the season.

Floral Wreaths by Katie Peterson. Dec. 20. Keiki can make their very own colorful wreath using tissue paper, pom-poms and paper plates.

Lahaina Arts Society

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, LAS will be featuring feather artist Ellen Levinsky and fine art photographer Marty Wolff in the Banyan Tree Gallery in the Old Lahaina Courthouse, 648 Wharf St., Lahaina.

Additionally, the LAS will be hosting its Art Fair under the Banyan Tree from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 10, 23, 30 and 31.
