EXPERIENCE CORAL REEF REGENERATION UP CLOSE
Rice coral reefs expected to spawn take the spotlight from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea. The Incredible Corals: Night at the Aquarium features evening admission to MOC with live entertainment, lecture by coral expert Dave Gulko and special presentations. General admission is $34.95 for adults, $24.95 for children ages 3 to 12 with discounts up to 50 percent for Hawaii residents, U.S. military and annual pass holders. OBON FESTIVAL LIGHTS UP MANTOKUJI MISSION
Two nights of joining “together in celebration and reunion” kicks off at 6 p.m. today and Saturday at Paia Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission, across from Paia Community Center. Enjoy performances by Maui Taiko and Zenshin Daiko, food booths and Bon dances both days, with services to begin the festivities. No charge for admission; donations welcome. COOL OFF TO ‘SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’ THIS SUMMER
Maui OnStage presents the Maui premiere of “Singin’ in the Rain,” adapted from the MGM movie musical and featuring classics such as “Fit as a Fiddle,” “All I Do is Dream of You” and, of course, the title song. Opening night performance is at 7:30 p.m. at the Historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 5. CULTURAL PRACTITIONER TALKS STORY ABOUT PELE
George Kahumoku Jr., musician and Hawaiian cultural practitioner, shares the history of Tutu Pele folklore and the stories he learned growing up on Hawaii Island from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Island Fresh Cafe in Paia. Learn a traditional chant and accompanying hula devoted to Pele and discover Hawaiian protocols, including native plants that embody Pele and the gifts, or ho’okupu, that honor her. Cost is $50. FREE TEEN DISASTER PREPAREDNESS CLASS
The summer’s final disaster preparedness program for teens takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today through July 19 on the UH -Maui College campus. The program trains teens in fire safety and suppression, light search and rescue, CPR and automated external defibrillator training, as well as other subjects.
