A MUSICAL ADVENTURE IN THE WOODS “WHERE ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN…”

In the shadows of trees, curses reverse and wishes come true. It’s a fanciful and peculiar place alive with magic: A flash of red, a basket of bread, a tall furry stranger; golden slippers, a girl on the run and a witch on a rampage over rutabagas. “Into the Woods,” an enchanting musical journey that goes beyond “happily ever after,” offers a feast of fabled characters — a little mystery, a lot of irreverent humor and a touch of seduction. Edgy, whimsical and wickedly funny, it’s the theatrical event of late summer featuring an A-list of Maui’s most talented performers. Whether you’re a musical theater virgin or a die-hard Stephen Sondheim fan, this is a must-see through and through. Presented by MAPA Live, performances are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays, opening Friday and running through Sept. 2 in Castle Theater at the MACC in Kahului. Tickets range from $22 to $66 (plus applicable fees). Parental guidance suggested. Some material may not be suitable for children under 10. To purchase tickets, visit the MACC box office, call 242-7469 or go online at www.mauiarts.org. For a more detailed exploration of “Into the Woods,” see BACKSTAGE story.
