FREE TALK ON DEMENTIA OFFERS TIPS, TECHNIQUES
Maui Adult Day Care Centers and Maui County Office on Aging present the free caregiver workshop, “Understanding Dementia Behaviors,” from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, 551 Wainee St. Led by Kathleen Couch, program coordinator for Maui Adult Day Care Centers, attendees will learn about all stages of dementia and tips and techniques for handling related behaviors. TOUR THE BALDWIN HOME MUSEUM BY CANDLELIGHT
Step back in time with a candlelight tour from 6 to 8:30 p.m. of the Baldwin Home Museum located on the corner of Front and Dickenson Street in Lahaina. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for kama’aina, senior citizens and active military. Children 12 years of age and younger are admitted free. Please note that admission also allows entry to the Wo Hing Museum on Front Street. Led by experienced docents, tours end with refreshments on the front lanai. MAKAWAO TOWN PARTY GOES OUT WITH A BANG
After eight wonderful years, Makawao Third Friday Town Party is rolling up its tents, but not without a big, fun send-off from 6 to 9 p.m. This special night will feature pop-up parties, sales and gatherings inside Makawao merchant stores as well as a variety of food trucks and booths, arts and crafts, keiki activities including storytelling with Genie Calagna Owens of Roots School from 6 to 6:20 p.m., plus free entertainment by the Jimmy Dillon Band, Travastar Starlight Fire and Light Show, Relic, Get Up and Dance, and so much more. GRAB A YUKATA FOR PAIA RINZAI ZEN OBON
Participate in the Japanese Buddhist tradition of obon, which honors the spirits of one’s ancestors, beginning with a service at 6 p.m. followed by dancing at 7 p.m. at Paia Rinzai Zen Mission, 20 Alawai Rd. near Baldwin Beach Park. Explore Okinawan culture through cuisine, a shisa dance and other activities. Admission is free.
‘CLEAR THE SHELTERS’ DAY AT MAUI HUMANE SOCIETY
Find your next best furry friend for free during Maui Humane Society’s recognition of national “Clear the Shelters” day. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., adoption fees will be waived on all dogs, cats and critters. Join more than 900 shelters nationwide that will be holding similar adoption events in an effort to address overcrowding and raise awareness about the benefits of adopting from a local animal shelter.
