Over 90 artists in Maui Open Studios

More than 90 artists are slated to participate in next month’s seventh annual Maui Open Studios Event, during which art lovers and collectors will have the chance to visit studios and exhibition spaces around the island.

The event will begin with an opening celebration and preview exhibition from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Pa’ina Building for culinary arts at the University of Hawaii Maui College in Kahului. Attendees can preview a few pieces of the participating artists’ work, connect with the creators and pick up a copy of the MOS guidebook containing an artist directory and maps. The reception will also feature a cash bar, no-host food options and live music.

Using the guidebooks, visitors can design self-guided tours throughout February. Artists in Kihei and Wailea will participate the weekend of Feb. 11 and 12. Studios in Lahaina, Central Maui, the north shore and Hana will be open Feb. 18 and 19. And Upcountry artists will open their spaces Feb. 25 and 26.

The event is free for the public and is intended to connect art enthusiasts and collectors with the island’s artist community. For more details, visit www.mauiopenstudios.com.

Renowned artists offer plein air class

The Maui Arts League and Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational Committee are still accepting applicants for a four-day plein air art workshop scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 2.

The “Finding Your Edge” workshop will feature two renowned instructors, award-winning plein air artists Jason Sacran and John P. Lasater IV, who excel at design, sophisticated color mixing, paint application and edge control. Students will compose several landscapes of West Maui during the workshop, which offers a rare opportunity for local artists and students to receive intense instruction from nationally ranked professionals.

Tuition is $700 plus tax and fees. For detailed workshop learning objectives, suggested workshop supplies list and access to the instructors’ resumes and websites, visit www.MauiPleinAirPainting.org.

Sacran and Lasater will be among the 26 award-winning artists from 12 states and Australia who will participate in the 2017 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational, scheduled for Feb. 18 to 26 in West Maui. There will be four events that will offer the chance for the public to meet the artists, watch them paint and purchase their art.
