100 Years Ago

1919 — Dr. Stephen T. Mather, director of the government national parks service, and Chief Landscape Engineer Ponchard, of the same bureau, will devote the last two days of this month to visiting Haleakala, in connection with its development as a part of the great national park system of the country.

75 Years Ago

1944 — From the fighting fronts continues to come word from Maui men on the front lines for their parents and friends to contribute heavily to the 1944 Red Cross Roll Call and War Fund Drive, now taking place on Maui.

50 Years Ago

1969 — The American Civil Liberties Union has agreed to help Wailuku attorney Sanford J. Langa in civil proceedings against members of the Maui Police Department. He is representing two men who were arrested for vagrancy at Puu Olai Beach near Makena.

25 Years Ago

1994 — Work on a draft environmental impact statement for a Kihei-Upcountry highway could start within 18 to 24 months. With luck and money, the road could be open sometime this decade.

10 Years Ago

2009 — A blessing and dedication ceremony will be held Saturday morning in Hana for the nation’s first communal home dialysis facility.
