Workshops offered in central Maui
Maui Nui Botanical Gardens will host two fun workshops in June.
Enjoy learning about the art of making kapa from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 8.
Led by Lisa Schattenburg-Raymond and Lei Ishikawa, the workshop will instruct attendees in wauke cultivation, harvesting techniques, kapa equipment and tools, as well as the process of turning wauke fiber into cloth.
The same instructors will lead a dye-making workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 22.
Participants will learn innovative processing techniques of many Hawaiian plants and other substances to produce traditional dyes used on kapa cloth.
Schattenburg-Raymond and Ishikawa will present information on identifying and collecting items, preparing dyes and how to use natural additives to manipulate color.
Cost for each workshop is $100 for current MNBG members or $125 for non-members.
