BETTER WORLD. . . Some of us old enough may remember that song by Zager and Evans: “In The Year 2525,” with the frightening lyrics, “If Man is Still Alive, If Woman Can Survive. . .”

Well, that date is certainly inching closer and I say, let’s survive it the best we can. I heard some hilarious ways to do just that at the Bill Maher comedy show New Year’s Day at Maui Arts & Cultural Center. But that’s a whole other story.

Those with resolutions may want to sign up for the “Slim Down, Energize Up and Strengthen Immunity” program with two sessions on Saturday and Jan. 13 at Wailea Healing Center.

The instructor is nutritionist and health coach Grace Purusha, who will help you to lose weight, regain your vitality and upgrade immunity over two weeks. Cost is $55. To register, call 269-0400.

Or you may just want to ramp up your own health regime. Fork & Salad in Kihei has a mission statement of “eat local, eat healthy.” A second eatery is planned to open near the Target store in Kahului in late April or early May.

Word has it that owners Jaron Blosser, Travis Morrin and Cody Christopher are planning to enhance the menu with steak, lemonades and iced teas. The trio also plans to expand the brand beyond Maui in the future.

Others among us may just be looking to survive financially in the new year, after too much holiday spending.

Lahaina Fish Co. offers panoramic ocean views and $5 Mai Tais from noon to 5 p.m. daily on Front Street. . . Cane & Canoe Bar at Montage Kapalua Bay wows with a daily happy hour from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with 50 percent off premium well drinks, featured wines, local beers, signature cocktails and chef’s pupu selections.

Hungry for authentic Mexican cuisine? Then plant yourself at Nachos Grande in Honokowai for some $2 Michoacan-style carnitas tacos and happy-hour drinks from 4 to 7 p.m. Margaritas and nachos are $5. Call 662-0890.

BITS AND PIECES . . . A couple of readers have asked what food would be available at the upcoming Maui Cannabis Conference, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa in Kaanapali. Well, the good news is that there will be munchies, but not of the marijuana kind.

“There will be non-psychoactive edibles with CBD available at the Edibles Magazine booth in the marketplace,” says the event’s executive producer Mary Bailey.

“Absolutely NO edibles with THC will be available, as it is illegal to be sold outside of a dispensary.”

Of course, the Hyatt has lots of creative grinds, such as the ahi poke nachos at its poolside ‘Umalu, sushi and hot Pacific Rim fare at Japengo and sizzling cuts of meat at Son’z Steakhouse. Those attendees craving dessert may want to delight in the chocolate souffle at Roy’s Kaanapali.

Running with the NFL Sunday Ticket in Paia is Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon. Catch all the games on the giant screen set up on the back stage; or drink in the gridiron action on other flat screens.

“Breakfast service starts at 7 a.m. Don’t miss our Bloody Mary bar,” says managing partner Jonathan Herman.

Mark your calendars for Feb. 24 when the Maui AIDS Foundation hosts its Mardi Gras Maui at Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea.

Tickets include meal with a New Orleans menu by the Four Seasons Executive Chef Craig Dryhurst, a silent auction, music by Shea Derrick & Full Flavor Band, a DJ after-party and photo booth. You must be 21 and older to attend.

“We had such a blast last year at the Four Seasons and we are thrilled to return!” says Maui AIDS Foundation Executive Director Steve Hire. “Bust out your best bedazzled masks, outrageously ornate outfits and fiercest dancing heels for a night of glitter and glitz you can’t get anywhere else on Maui — all for a great cause.”

Yes, I think Maui will help us survive in 2018. . . and beyond.
