RED HOT IDEAS . . . Just like oysters are considered to be aphrodisiacs, caviar is thought to be oh-so seductive with a chilled bottle of bubbly.

One-ounce tins of Petrossian caviar and fine bottles of champagne may be found at Wailea Wine, tucked away off Wailea Ike Drive near Matteo’s Osteria. Choose from the classic Baika caviar or the Tsar Imperial Transmontanus variety.

“This caviar is plucked only from the cold fathoms of Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest lake, in Russian Siberia,” says Wailea Wine owner Ed Mikesh in a post of Baika caviar y on his website.

Want to buy the foodie and movie-going lover in your life the perfect Valentine’s Day gift pairing?

Screening in June, Maui Film Festival at Wailea is offering a 28 percent discount on its celebrity-studded culinary parties for a limited time.

Parties are Taste of Summer on June 13 at Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort; Taste of Chocolate at Four Seasons Resort Maui on June 15; and Taste of Wailea above the Celestial Cinema at Wailea Golf Academy on June 16.

Film passes are also now discounted to 20 percent off. For tickets, email film festival Founder-director Barry Rivers at info@mauifilmfestial.com.

Maui has always been a mixed plate of cultures. But now I hear that the Irish pub and restaurant Mulligans on the Blue in Wailea will be putting on a Mardi Gras party on Tuesday.

“Soul Kitchen will be serving up very special Mardi Gras music for you,” says its keyboardist Michael Gelem. “Mulligans will have New Orleans-style cuisine such as gumbo, jambalaya, Louisiana bread pudding and crab cakes along with free beads, masks and face painting — and you may sip some $8 Hurricanes.”

Home Maid Bakery in Wailuku will be deep-frying up a storm for Fat Tuesday. Thousands of malasadas will be piping hot and rolled in sugar.

Speaking of sweets, University of Hawaii Maui College Culinary Arts Program will open its Sugar Cubed outlet in the Paina Building Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for its annual bon-bon and baked goods sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As icing on the cake, those who show a stamped receipt of purchase to Paniolo Grill and World Plate food outlets in the same building will get a 15-percent discount off their food. Food Court lunch hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The owner of Sugar Beach Events in North Kihei says that Valentine’s Day is all about romance and indulgence. She wants to teach you to cook an amorous meal that your mate will adore. So she’ll host classes from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m Monday and Tuesday for those 21 and older.

“There’s a surprise in store from the liquor cabinet, and we’ll make lobster salad, Caesar salad, sauteed hearts of palm; baked and then stuffed potatoes Provencal, duo of beef with truffle sauce, sesame-crusted fresh catch with ginger-lime beurre blanc and a trio of desserts,” says Chef-owner Lee Anderson, who will provide students with recipes to take home and try. Spa Montage Kapalua Bay will awaken you to an “open-hearted inquisitiveness” with a yoga class that includes bubbly at 5 p.m. Feb. 15 on its ocean lawn.

This partners class is called Champagne & Chakras at the Point. After you breathe deep and stretch it out, sip an effervescing cocktail featuring Veuve Cliquot. For more details, call 662-6600.

Want to indulge in the ultimate feel-good Valentine’s Day treatment? Book now for the Champagne & Roses couples massage at Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas and afterwards, sip a cold glass of bubbly while nibbling on delicious dark chocolates. Cost is $300. Or you may buy an individual treatment for your better half for $140 — the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. For more details, call 662-2644.
