OPTIMUM HAVEN . . . Maui’s always at the top of the heap. The latest kudos is that it remains the “Top Island in Hawaii,” according to readers of Travel + Leisure’s 2018 “World’s Best” poll.

“With stellar food, friendly people, lots to do and, of course, spectacular beaches, Maui is a pretty perfect package according to T+L readers,” says Editor-in-Chief Nathan Lump. “So, it’s no surprise to see that this perennial favorite has topped the list once again.”

Visitors (and residents) will love the new Maui Sunday Market launching from 4 to 8 p.m. this weekend at the Kahului Shopping Center outdoors near Burger King. The area is called “Port Town” as it’s close to where cruise ships such as Pride of America dock.

Maui Sunday Market will be a free, family-friendly event with 30 vendors featuring arts and crafts, prepared foods, produce and flowers. Crowds of up to 3,000 are expected to walk through and listen to music, too, with the lineup booked by Willie K’s brother Kaui Kahaiali’i, also the event coordinator.

Maui Street Eatz is food-truck organizer and it will roll in a rotating collective of 10 of the isle’s best food vendors on wheels, according to its co-owner Matt Laundrie. “This week, we’ll have trucks like Hawaiian Barbecue, Cream B Maui, Pele’s Pizza with a really cool cob oven, Dino’s, Lehua Living, Sparky’s Food Co., Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, Just Put-in from Montreal, Frenchy’s Dip ‘n’ Dunk and Big Beach Barbecue. The next week, Three’s Bar & Grill will roll in with its truck.”

Follow the aromas to the Back Door Bake Shop pop-up at University of Hawaii Maui College from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays. This week, petit fours will be the desserts du jour, and July 27 chocolate bon bons will take center stage. Just go to the back door of the Pa’ina culinary building on the Kahului campus.

Plantation House Kapalua seems to have something fun cooking every night of the week. Monday, it’s Kamaaina Night with 20 percent off food for those with valid Hawaii IDs. Tuesday is Date Night. Get two entrees and a bottle of wine for $69.95 per couple. Wednesdays, Wine Down with 50 percent off select bottles of wine. Thursdays, sink your teeth into Prime Rib Night at $39.95 per person. Saturdays, Mimosa Madness offers tropical bubbly flutes for $7 until 3 p.m. Sundays, Surfs Up with two surf and turf entrees and sparkling wine for $75 per couple.
