Rotary clubs fight to end polio worldwide

In honor of World Polio Day on Oct. 24, the 10 Rotary clubs on Maui completed a four-month fundraising effort as part of Rotary’s 27-year mission to eradicate the crippling childhood disease.

The Maui clubs raised close to $3,000 since July 1 for the effort.

Some of the activities held World Polio Day weekend were Trick or Treat for Polio Plus with high school Interact clubs, collecting of contributions at a booth sponsored by three Rotary clubs during Kihei 4th Friday, a West Side Golf Tournament benefit and sales of “Light Up Rotary” color-changing mugs.

All proceeds were forwarded to Rotary District 5000 (50 clubs in Hawaii) and will be matched dollar for dollar by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
