Maui Zenshin Daiko drummers to play at Spurs game, gala in Texas

Maui’s Zenshin Daiko drummers will be heard far and wide in the Lone Star State of Texas during spring break.

In addition to playing during halftime at the San Antonio Spurs vs. Minnesota Timberwolves National Basketball Association game at AT&T Center in San Antonio on March 15, the troupe will appear at the Witte South Texas Heritage Museum, on the morning news and at other venues across the city.

All of the appearances lead up to the main reason Zenshin Daiko drummers are traveling to San Antonio: the group will join Susan Moulton and the Will Smith Foundation for the 6th Anniversary Gala in San Antonio on March 19.

They will be joined by legendary Maui waterman Archie Kalepa.

“We want the people of Texas to see, hear and feel the music these kids make, and we want to raise funds to support their program,” said Moulton.

“The kids of Zenshin Daiko represent exactly what the Will Smith Foundation wants for every child. These are kids who work together and support each other in making beautiful music,” Moulton said. “Every kid wants to pick up a stick and beat on a drum, but these kids practice for years with devotion to make their sound harmonious and resonant. To feel the drums in your bones and to see the ritual dance that makes Zenshin Daiko an art form is inspiring.”

The money raised from the gala and other events and donations are distributed to children’s charities in Hawaii, Texas and Africa, places Will Smith traveled to and loved, according to a news release.

The Will Smith Foundation was founded in the name of Smith, who was killed in a car crash on Maui in 2007. The organization’s mission is to help children in need. Since 2007, it has donated millions of dollars to children’s charities worldwide.
