8th-grader graduates from Japanese school

A Wailuku Hongwanji Gekuen graduation ceremony and awards presentation took place May 22 at the Wailuku Hongwanji temple.

Alana Yoshiko Buttad, an 8th-grader at the Japanese Language School, received a diploma for her completion of her eight years of Japanese language school.

Buttad also received the following awards: Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii Bishop’s Award, Hawaii Kyoikukai Outstanding Award, and Japanese Educational Fund of Hawaii.

Buttad said she is going to Baldwin High School in August and will take classes in Japanese.

The following students also received special awards: Aimi Sean Sakamoto – Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii Bishop’s Award (6th-grader) and Japanese Educational Fund of Hawaii; Joseph Fernandez – Japanese Educational Fund of Hawaii; Payton Chiemi Shimizu – Japanese Educational Fund of Hawaii; Jaydelyn Mina Suzuki – Japanese Educational Fund of Hawaii; Akira Iwata – Japanese Educational Fund of Hawaii; and Jadyn Kimiko Corniel – Japanese Educational Fund of Hawaii.

Japanese school registration forms are available at the temple office and registration will be from 9 to 11 a.m. June 11. Gakuen will begin on Aug. 3.
