Butterflies swarm Upcountry
FIRST PHOTO: Monarch butterflies swarm blooms on a eucalyptus tree at Kula Botanical Garden earlier this month.
SECOND PHOTO: Owners Warren and Helen McCord said the trees had been covered by butterflies for three weeks, adding they had never seen so many butterflies in the trees since they established the gardens in 1968. “I’ve seen a few in past years, here and there, but never like this,” Helen said. “I can’t even guess the numbers, thousands. It’s cool.” Warren said that the unusually wet summer may have played a role in the influx. “The only thing I can surmise is (that) because of the rainy weather we have had they have thrived,” he said.
