The Junior Men’s Division heads for the waves at an earlier Pa‘ia Bay Beachfest. The 20th annual event will take place Saturday and Jan. 22 on the beach side of the Pa‘ia Youth & Cultural Center.

Beachfest billed as  family-friendly event

The 20th annual Pa’ia Bay Beachfest, a family-friendly showcase for Maui’s young bodyboarders, will take place Saturday and Jan. 22 at Paia Bay.

This year will feature special guests, including world champion waterman Kai Lenny, and IBA world tour champion bodyboarding duo Jeff and Dave Hubbard.

The competition is organized by Marlon Tumacder, a Pa’ia Youth & Cultural Center alumnus; community board-riders and PYCC staff. The Pa’ia Bay Beachfest is held directly on the beach side of the PYCC facility at Paia Bay. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the first heat is in the water at 8 a.m.

Divisions include Menehune, Juniors, Wahine, Kane, Drop Knee and Free Surfing in addition to the cash-prize PRO/AM division. There’s a $20 fee to enter before the event, and a $30 fee the day of the event. Spectators are admitted free.

West Maui water focus of meeting

Hui O Ka Wai Ola (Association of the Living Waters) will have a community meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lahainaluna High School cafeteria.

Members of the group will share results from water samples taken in West Maui over the last six months. The group needs volunteers to help with data entry, outreach and education with schools, bookkeeping, donations and sampling.

The meeting will include a presentation followed by small group interactive conversations with staff and volunteers. Light pupu will be provided.

Hui O Ka Wai Ola is a partnership between the Maui Nui Marine Resources Council, The Nature Conservancy, West Maui Ridge to Reef and University of Hawaii Maui College.

Toastmasters plan 10-year celebration

Toastmasters in Kapalua invites the public to its 10th anniversary celebration from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Kapalua Adventure Center meeting room, 1 Ritz Carlton Drive in Kapalua.

Attendees will learn how Toastmasters can help improve leadership and speaking skills. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

Orchid breeder from Calif. to speak

Dave Sorokowsky from Paph Paradise in Lockeford, Calif., will be the featured speaker when the Maui Orchid Society meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wailuku Community Center.

The meeting will open with member Ted Plume sharing his knowledge on “Repotting Phalaenopsis.”

Sorokowsky has been growing Paphiopedilums for about 12 years and seriously hybridizing for the past 10 years. His Paphiopedilums have received over 50 awards to date from the American Orchid Society.

Sorokowsky and his wife, Stacey, started Paph Paradise in 2013, with many of his award-winning plants playing a key role in their breeding program.

Maui Orchid Society meetings are open to the public; however, only members are able to participate in door prize orchid giveaways, show-and-tell exhibits and sometimes silent and live auctions.

Annual membership is $15; free for people over 80.

Pukalani association to meet on Tuesday

Rick Woodford from the Maui Friends of the Library will be the guest speaker at the 6 p.m. meeting of the Pukalani Community Association on Tuesday in the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center downstairs meeting room.

Other discussion items will include the Verizon Wireless antenna location update, planning for the PCA Golf Tournament and park picnic benches update, among other items. The public is invited and refreshments will be served.

Filipino community focus of publication

A group of citizens led by Tante Urban and Vince Bagoyo Jr. have launched the Fil-Am Voice, Maui’s newest community newspaper.

“Our purpose of starting the Fil-Am Voice was to find a vehicle to uplift Maui’s Filipino community while documenting and supporting its social progress, cultural celebrations, political empowerment and businesses successes” said Urban. “The Filipino community is growing by leaps and bounds,” added Bagoyo, “with Filipinos and part-Filipinos making up the second largest ethnic group in Hawaii.”

The Fil-Am Voice will feature news articles, community news and events and regular columns covering government, health, food, business, culture, youth and education.

The free newspaper will be distributed at various locations on Maui, with an internet copy also available. For more information, call 242-8100.

Open house planned at Seabury Hall

Seabury Hall will have an open house for prospective students and families on Saturday. Registration will start at 8:30 a.m. in Cooper House. The program will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

The school’s mission and philosophy, Upper and Middle School curriculum, extracurricular programs, application and financial aid process will be presented by the head of school, division heads and admissions team. Faculty members will give short demonstrations in their classrooms. The morning will also include a campus tour, student presentations and refreshments. Information will also be shared about the Malone Foundation, Maunalei and Hawaiian Ancestry scholarships.

Block Party presale tickets available

Presale scrip are available until Friday for Baldwin High School’s third annual Block Party from 4 to 9 p.m. Feb. 4 on the campus front lawn. Purchase 20, $1 presale scrip for $18 at the school’s front office.

The event will feature food booths and trucks, games, entertainment, a video game tournament, storytelling festival, art expo, Barnes & Noble book fair and Da Bounce Dunk Tank.

The annual block party supports BHS sports teams, clubs and organizations.

Presentation by ACLU at college

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii will present a civil rights discussion from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at University of Hawaii Maui College, Ka Lama Building, Room 103. The UH-MC Human Services Department and Maui Peace Action are co-hosts.

ACLU staff will bring three timely topics to the table: Defending civil rights in the new administration; community control of police surveillance; and ending mass incarceration in Hawaii.

Dramatic reading for keiki at library

Papa Lopaka (Robert DeVinck) will give a dramatic reading of the Classics Illustrated comic book of Mark Twain’s “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Kihei Public Library.

Lopaka is a writer, English literature scholar and longtime reader of classic books. Following the reading, Lopaka will encourage children to read the original book. This event is suitable for ages 6 and up. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Kay A. Edwards Memorial Fund.
