Golf ball drop, celebration on Thursday

Palaka Awards will be presented

The Rotary Club of Kahului will have its 2018 Michael H. Lyons II Memorial Scholarship Palaka Golf Ball Drop & Celebration beginning with a social hour at 4 p.m. Thursday at the King Kamehameha Golf Club. The golf ball drop will be at 5 and the celebration will follow.

Lyons, for whom the fund and the Palaka Award are named, was the epitome of a Rotarian and a prominent figure in the Maui community, according to a news release. He served as president of the Rotary Club of Kahului and as governor of Rotary District 5000. Lyons died on March 26, 2004.

The Rotary Club of Kahului’s annual Palaka Awards distinguishes outstanding long-term volunteer service to nonprofit organizations on Maui. Named for the signature palaka shirts Lyons wore, the award pays tribute to community members who demonstrate their commitment to helping others by volunteering their time, talent and treasure to create positive change and stronger communities on Maui.

This year, the club will be honoring Hoaloha Na Eha Ltd. for its philanthropy service in the community. Hoaloha Na Eha is composed of longtime friends Michael Moore, Robert Aguiar and Tim Moore.

The club will also honor Mahina Martin for her community service.

Net proceeds directly fund the Rotary Club of Kahului’s Michael H. Lyons II Scholarship Program, providing college scholarships for exceptional Maui youths.
