Self-healing topic of presentation

Akaku Upstairs will present “The Multi-dimensional Human: Weird Science & Self-Healing” with Debra Greene, Ph.D., from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at 333 Dairy Road, Suite 204, in Kahului.

In this interactive presentation, attendees will learn about their internal senses and use them to navigate a clear map of their interior, according to an announcement. They will explore the behaviors of thought-forms and use their mind to change physical reality, the announcement states.

Greene is the author of “Endless Energy: The Essential Guide to Energy Health.” She holds a Ph.D. from Ohio State University and is a wellness consultant at Four Seasons Resort Maui.

BHS Class of ’83 announces reunion

The Baldwin High School class of 1983 announces its 35th-year class reunion for Oct. 12 and 13. The reunion kicks off with a gathering at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at Tiffany’s Bar & Grill in Wailuku.

A sunset booze cruise on the Pacific Whale Foundation catamaran is set for 5 p.m. Oct. 13 out of Maalaea.

Entries sought for app challenge

U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard announced that she is accepting submissions from Hawaii middle and high school students for the Congressional App Challenge, a nationwide app competition.

The CAC accepts computer programs (or apps) written in any programming language for any platform (desktop/PC, web, mobile, raspberry Pi, etc.).

Students must first register online at www.congressionalappchallenge.us and submit their app by Oct. 15.

The competition is open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements, regardless of coding experience. Winners will be selected by panels of judges, drawn from the Hawaii community, and honored by Gabbard.

Their apps are eligible to be featured on a display in the U.S. Capitol building, on house.gov, and on the Congressional App Challenge website.

Death and life topic of new class

The Rev. Bodhi Be, executive director of Doorway Into Light, will be teach a class at University of Hawaii Maui College titled “Showing Up for Death, Nourishing Life.”

The class will be two Tuesdays and two Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. starting on Oct. 16.

Topics will include: “Preparing for death and why bother,” “Caring for a loved one who is dying,” “The laws and choices in Hawaii and their financial and environmental costs,” and “The issues surrounding medical aid in dying which is coming to Hawaii in 2019.”

The class will look at beliefs about dying and death as well as cultural, religious and medical views.

Parkinson’s topic of presentation

Roselani Place will host a free community talk for people with Parkinson’s disease from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday in the third-floor lobby at 88 S. Papa Ave. in Kahului.

Parkinson Wellness Recovery faculty in conjunction with Bayada Home Health Care will present information on Exercise 4 Brain Change Essentials.

Participants will learn how to optimize brain health and combat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Registration open for Science Olympiad

Registration to the ninth annual Maui Regional Science Olympiad tournament is open. Team coaches can find the link to the registration form at www.hsso.org.

The tournament will be held on Feb. 2, 2019, at University of Hawaii Maui College. Any public or private middle school and high school on Maui can participate.

Toastmasters plan to share laughs

No Ka Oi Toastmasters will sponsor a free event, “Just for Laughs,” on Friday at the Maui Coffee Attic in Wailuku.

The event will spotlight members’ speaking skills and the audience will vote for its favorite speaker.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the program will be from 6 to 8.

Tai chi instructor training available

A certified instructor training workshop in tai chi for arthritis and fall prevention will be offered at the Kaunoa Senior Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 20 and 21.

This course requires preregistration by Sept. 30 so that people who wish to participate can begin to read and practice the movements prior to the workshop.

This course is approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Injury Prevention and the National Council on Aging.

The course is being taught by Master Trainer Ileina Ferrier. It is being sponsored by the state Department of Health, Emergency Medical Services and Injury Prevention System Branch.

Interested participants need to register at www.tchi.org under the pull down menu “workshops.”

The registration fee for the two-day workshop is $225.

Sea-level rise in Hawaii topic of talk

The American Institute of Architects will present a 90-minute talk on “Planning for Sea Level Rise in Hawaii” at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Pacific Whale Foundation in Maalaea Harbor.

The program was postponed last month due to Hurricane Lane.

Panelists include Tara Owen, University of Hawaii; James Buika, Maui County coastal zone planner; Lawrence Carnicelli, Maui Planning Commission; and Jesse Colandrea, state flood plain manager.

The cost is $20 for members, and $25 for nonmembers. Lunch is included.
