‘Paint Out’ celebrates young artists

Youths in grades 3-12 learned painting techniques Feb. 17 during the Maui Plein Air Youth Outdoor Paint Out at Campbell Park in Lahaina. Their instructor was artist Darice Machel McGuire, owner of E-Art Studio.

Maui Arts League and Honu and Frida’s restaurants sponsored the free painting workshop that included all materials and a hot lunch. Kim von Tempsky, retired Lahaina Galleries marketing executive, judged the paintings in three age divisions at a reception and exhibit at Pioneer Inn.

In the high school division, 10th-grader Mateya Prestage earned best in show and Anysis Fuentes was runner-up. In the middle school division, Marley Sanibay, 6th grade, took best in show and Kye Kukahilo was runner-up. In the elementary division, 3rd-grader Kaliko’okalani Teruya won best in show and Luke Mounts, Grade 3, won runner-up.

Winners received gift certificates for $50 of art materials from Lahaina Ace and $50 from Blick Art Materials online store. Runners-up won a certificate for $50 from Blick. All participants received a certificate of participation.

Sponsors, parents, volunteers and Waiola Church all made this free community workshop possible.
