Junior Lifeguard registration to begin

Junior Lifeguard Program registration for those ages 7 to 14 years begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kihei Aquatic Center.

It will be a first-come, first-served basis and will continue until all spaces are filled. Participants and parents/guardians must register in person. Participants must also take and pass a swim test.

The program is sponsored by Maui County’s Department of Parks and Recreation, Aquatics Section.

The program has two age groups, both at the Kihei Acquatic Center.

One is the mini lifeguard program for ages 7 to 10 and runs from June 24 to June 28 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Prerequisites are: swim the front crawl 25 yards nonstop; tread water for 30 seconds using arms and legs; and show a level of comfort on the back by floating for 30 seconds.

There is the junior lifeguard program for ages 11 to 14. It will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 1 to 12, Monday through Friday.

Prerequisites are: swim the front crawl 50 yards nonstop; tread water for one minute using arms and legs; show a level of comfort on the back by floating for one minute; and swim a distance of 10 feet and submerge to a depth of 9 feet.
