PWF plans World Oceans Day activities
Pacific Whale Foundation is observing World Oceans Day on Saturday with a host of activities beginning with ocean-related movie shorts at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Monday at Paia Bay Coffee. Screenings will include “Tourism vs Shark Fishery,” featuring Madison Stewart (aka Shark Girl); “Finding Away,” featuring spearfishing champion Kimi Werner; and “Trashy Selfie,” featuring world champion windsurfer Sarah Hauser and big-wave surfer Paige Alms.
Activities on Saturday include beach cleanups from 9 to 11 a.m. at Kamaole III Beach in Kihei, Paia Bay and Kahului Harbor. Participants in cleanup efforts and data collection will receive discounts at the Pacific Whale Foundation Ocean Store and a chance to win passes to Maui Ocean Center.
Other activities will include a Citizen Science Microplastic Tow from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. while en route to Olowalu reef where participants will remove reef rubbish. While in the water, snorkelers will collect seawater samples, filtering for debris and recording data with the assistance of trained marine naturalists onboard Ocean Odyssey.
