Golf balls to drop at Rotary fundraiser
Palaka awards a highlight of event
The Rotary Club of Kahului will have its 2019 Michael H. Lyons II Memorial Scholarship Palaka Celebration Fundraiser and Golf Ball Drop on Friday at the King Kamehameha Golf Club, beginning with a social hour at 4 p.m. The helicopter golf ball drop will be at 5 and the celebration will follow.
Lyons, for whom the fund and the Palaka Award are named, was the epitome of a Rotarian and a prominent figure in the Maui community, according to a news release. He served as president of the Rotary Club of Kahului and as governor of Rotary District 5000. Lyons died on March 26, 2004.
The Rotary Club of Kahului’s annual Palaka Award distinguishes outstanding long-term philanthropy and volunteer service to nonprofit organizations on Maui.
Named for the signature palaka shirts Lyons wore, the award pays tribute to community members who demonstrate their commitment to helping others by volunteering their time, talent and treasure to create positive change and stronger communities on Maui.
This year, the club is honoring Goodfellow Bros. for its philanthropy service to Maui community. The club is also honoring Mercer K. “Chubby” Vicens for his community and volunteer service. And new this year, the club is honoring Larry Laird for his extended contributions to the Maui Rotary clubs and youths of Maui.
Net proceeds directly fund the Rotary Club of Kahului’s Michael H. Lyons II Scholarship Program, providing college scholarships for exceptional and deserving Maui youths.
